Each judge in both “Top Chief “ and “ Project Runway” have some idea of what they want to see in the food they taste or the garment they see. They all have some sort of standards set in their minds that must either be met or surpassed by these contestants. The tricky part in all of these types of shows is that none of the contestants know what exactly the judges are looking for. So, each contestant works their hardest to create the most original, creative, well made, able to be worn, tastes phenomenal, appealing to the eye, combining concept with construction, and must have craftsmanship and style piece of work in hopes of pleasing the judges. I feel in these episodes that we have been exposed to show the variety of aspects that the judges are looking for. For example “Project Runway” episode 1 the judges were more so concerned about the appropriateness for the occasion the person would be attending, also they didn’t want anyone to be safe or boring. Then they ended up dismissing one of the craziest outfits that walked the runway. All of the things the judges are looking for are rarely consistent week by week. They say they want the garments to be made well but not constructed, must have a balance of a look and a concept must be risky but not too risky. The varying expectations are what is so difficult about these challenges because the contestants have no idea what to expect.
Our class is dealing with judgment and so I believe that the assignment of this blog is exactly what we are learning about. For example, in the television programs “Top Chief” and “Project Runway”, the contestants are given a challenge but have no real regulations, guidelines or criteria to follow. They are all just thrown into a situation where they are supposed to be creative and interesting, but they must also keep in mind that they will be judged by a panel of specialists who will critique every move that they make and every risk that they take. So, in a way, doing this blog is a small subset of the challenges the competitors on these television shows must go through. This is due to the fact that we are asked to contribute to this blog with somewhat of an idea of what is expected of us but there are no criteria to follow or rules to with hold. Then, we are supposed to post this blog and allow everyone in the class to read and judge them, while having no idea whether or not anyone will appreciate what we have to say.
