Johanna also mentions the emphasis on letters she references a essay in which “Each page was headed by a letter of the alphabet located in a word which spoke the letter’s name.” In Carr’s easy he used larger sized font and bold lettering to distinguish his thoughts throughout the essay. He also used his title and first paragraph to his advantage by utilizing his fonts and also by using a quote from Space Odyssey.
Many of the examples and explanations through the essay “Letterpress Language: Typography as a Medium for The Visual Representation of Language” were about differentiation between important, less important, well known, unknown, thoughtful, thoughtless, and many other words and terms incorporated in an article. In Carr’s essay he would use smaller fonts, upper case letters, pictures, quotes, and colors to help differentiate his meaning behind the words he chose.

I guess first our group came up with the similarities and the most obvious one is that they're both about technology. Both of the articles talks about information and what it is doing to our habits. The Google article is talking about how Google is negatively effecting our brain and the Technologies essay is talking about how graphic designing programs can help us come up with new and interesting ways to write a paper, forcing us to think about what we are writing a bit more. We also said that another major difference is that the Google article had a much more negative tone and the Technologies article had a much more positive one.
After saying all that I would have to say that question didn't change how I reader either article or effect my comprehention of it. It didn't do either because I didn't know what my assignment was when I was reading through both of the articles. However, when we where assigned that question I did have to look back through both to get more points to talk about. I would also have to say the the way the Technologies article was written might have effected how well I read the article because of the formating some of the sentenses seemed cut off and choppy. The Google article I might had read a bit differently because I'm tired of reading articles written telling us that technology is bad and making us stupid.

Some of the factors that we chose were in the essay itself. For instance, the fact that the writing was so small and close together made the essay appear intimidating. Therefore make those who read it want to just skim it, instead of making sure that they understand it. Then there was one picture that was kind of distracting. Then some of the other factors had to do with the way the essay was presented to us. For example, when it was given to the class we did not even have a clue what it was going to be about. Then we were only given ten minutes to read it, thus making us just want to skim through it. However, on the positive side the classroom environment being quiet made it much easier to pay attention to the essay, because ther were no distractions.
Overall I did not finish reading the essay in class. These examples were some of the obstacles I had to pass to read it or some of the things that made it easier for me to concentrate. These are things to look for to either prevent or help when the students are reading essays.

One of the things that Nicholas Carr gave to his essay to capture the reader was that he created a unique title, that drew attention and gave the reader the question, “um, I wonder that this is about?” which made them read on. Another thing that Nicholas Carr did with the essay was that he quoted from the movie Space Odyssey 2001 which gave the reader a familiar feeling and comfortable about maybe what the material is about. This gave the reader even more reason to read on.
As a reader would follow on in the essay they see that there is not only very good research, but also very good visual aid. He gave a picture which gave a visual picture in the readers mind to see what the author is talking about, and help understand his topic. Later on I saw also that he would use big letters to start off a new part of the topic in the essay. This is very good because it lets the reader know that they have completed a thought of the essay and it helps them connect it to the next part. It can also be seen as a check point in the writing, showing that they have gotten such far and has such and such more to go, before all date is collected.
Other comparisons between the two is that although Carr's essay is very long it still has a very simple structure of intro body and conclusion. Another main mechanical difference is how both the class and Carr rely text to various parts of the essay to give example and other evidence.
group1
Materially, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr went into great detail about how technology, in specific the internet, has changed the thought process for many people today. With advances in technology, people are having a shorter attention span. The author incorporated a lot of outside research that went into creating this passage. This differs from the essays written in class in that we have been writing from personal experience and have not researched information to support our writing. When a writer incorporates resources, statistics, and facts in their writing it supports the main topic and conveys that the author has a valid point. Another way to do so is to offer different points of view for the reader to consider. Where the author of this passage showed different facts that represented each take on the issue, our essays in class tend to be focused on one view. The point of view, in which our essays have been writing in, is through the author’s eyes or first person.
Technologically, the essays in English 101 have been basic essays with a set amount of paragraphs. In the article by Carr, he added interest to the reading by incorporating pictures and large quotes. When adding pictures and quotes it should convey an important detail about the paper. The essays have also been significantly shorter than the passage. This does not necessarily make the passage better but it does convey that the author has a lot of detail and can fully support their topic. One way to lengthen the essays written in class would be to add more detail about each event that occurred. This would depict a specific picture in the audience’s mind while reading.

i must say that reading the article in class didn`t really change my interpretation of the article. either way the article(s) still read the same. they weren`t hard to comprehend at all. it could possibly be because i`m missing an important concept or something. i`m not sure.
since the "what is the internet doing to our brains?" article was more interestingly put and written, i was more able to read it. i liked it more. not saying that the other article was boring, but the "what is the..." was more creative with how it was explained.

Secondly, the font for me was very small so it was hard for me to read it quickly without having to take a second glance to make sure i read it right the first time. With a bigger text it would have been a much easier read than with the text that was used on this essay.
Lastly, there was a picture right in the beginning of the essay so right away I was distracted by looking at the picture focusing more on that than the essay. Sometimes I doodle on the picture which takes time away from me reading the essay. This is bad because we were timed and because I took time to color I had to skim to catch up to where I should have been if I was not doodling. If that picture would not have been there I maybe would have understood the essay better because I would not have skimmed the essay.

Technologically Carr uses a lot of information and stories from other writers to back up his article and provide other point of views to the topic. He starts many of his thoughts or paragraphs with a quote or citation from another piece of work to get his idea rolling. He describes many situations comparing the way we interacted and thought before and after the arrival of the internet, which entices the reader and makes them become very involved in the topic.
It is obvious that Nicholas Carr did a lot of research for this article, to include the amount of information which he did. While the topics of the papers we had to do this semester were nothing like the internet’s effect on our brain, it is still safe to say that Carr’s included a lot more information and different materials than we would have to. He also goes into greater detail to entice the reader and make them interested in the topic.
Group 3
My group's question almost made me lose interest in both of these articles when I was reading these I did not really get that much out of them because I think I needed a lot more background information on both and that I think would have to catch my interest before I actually start paying attention and getting a lot out of it. So in this case my question made my interpretation of both articles as negative which is never a good sign.
The question of finding the relationships between the two articles if you really think about it should not have a lot of affect on your interpretation of the article but I believe that sometimes that can be the biggest thing when you are critically analyzing these types of articles. Normally I would side with the it should not affect the way you interpret something but I decided for these to look at the other point of view and now both sides are coming clear to me and I now understand both stances .

In the article What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains the author is trying to help us understand that technology isn’t all bad and that technology has allowed the writer the ability to grasp the readers’ attention more easily. For example he states that even a piece of printing paper with black ink on it is more appealing to the eye then a hand written essay on lined paper. He also goes on to explain to us all of our options we have to make our papers more appealing suck as gloss paper colored paper, font colors and sized, and italicized words. The author states that all of these options that we have can be used to emphasis meanings and compel the reader to keep reading better then a piece of lined paper and a pencil could ever do. In the article is Google Making Us Stupid? The author Nicholas Carr states that we are becoming incapable of reading long stories because we are so used to surfing the web and power skimming to pick up only the key points. However Carr says that this isn’t exactly bad because although we do not read whole books we are actually doing more reading then we used to in the 70’s and 80’s.
Both these papers are the same in regards that both of them deal with technology and how it is changing the way we write and read. However these two articles do not have the same view on things. Nicholas’ article looks more towards the fact that we as people in this time and age power skim and only pick up on the main picture of things and do not get all the details, while in the article What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains the author focuses more on what we can do with technology these days to make something more appealing to the reader. In my own opinion though these two articles counter act each other because I believe the reason for our power skimming online is due to the fact that so many things look so appealing to read that are actually just a big waste of time and we have to power skim or we won’t get time to read the things that are actually filled with information that we find interesting.
group 4
Our group came up with numerous material conditions that affected the way we read “Is Google Making Us Stupid.” The first, reading in the classroom helped us stay focused on the task. Because we were given only ten minutes to read this essay, we all were forced to stay on topic and read as fast as we could to finish. Also, the classroom environment helped us stay on task because there was less distractions. We didn’t have the chance to surf the web or listen to music while reading the essay. Thus helping us stay on task and also helping us remember what we were reading.
Second, we said that having only one picture on the page helped us readers stay focused on the text and what the text was trying to get across rather than having multiple pictures per essay. In my opinion, pictures tend to take our attention away from the writing and having pictures in essays help us lose focus. I for one strongly believe that we lose our focus with the more pictures because I tend to find myself coloring in the pictures and making funny faces instead of reading the material. Sometimes pictures used in a good way enhance the writing, but comics and other such pictures tend to be distracting.
Lastly, we said that the small print the essay had was a little deceiving. Not many people like reading small print essays and an essay that long with small print isn’t appealing to many readers. Small print also helps us lose focus because we tend to lose our place more if the print is tinny. If the spacing is close together as well, we usually have trouble finding where we left off or where the last line ended. Therefore small print can contribute to a lack of focus.
Group 2
In regards to the content of an essay authors can incorporate many fascinating facts and information to portray their purpose and intent. The way that Carr handles this was by incorporating quotes he references Space Odyssey and also other famous specialists. He used these quotes to his advantage using them to reflect upon or introduce a thought. He also paraphrased and summarized stories from other great thinkers pasts. Thoughts and experiences that he or other people my have had.
Esthetically, Carr made his essay special to the reader, different from everything else. He Began his essay with quite a large title giving the reader the feel of the importance of what it said. Then he went on to make his font smaller. I feel he did this to force the reader to look hard and focus on his essay. He used larger bolder letters to signify the change in subject. Also he included a picture, by doing this he gave the reader a break from words to get a visual of what exactly his essay was describing. The page layout of this essay also made it feel very news paper like, with thin columns of paragraphs. This chosen layout made the essay feel as it was breaking news, something important, and that it was different then a regular essay.

Technology
Technology has made us dependable on it. Word processor is an example of this. When typing a paper, this technology has made it easy for us to forget how to spell correctly because it does the work for you. It will show you were your mistake is and how to fix it. Without this technology it might take us longer to write a paper but I believe that our generation would be better and writing and spelling. Our generation to an extent is lazy. Then when the program is not working we get frustrated and mad but think about what it would be like without that software.
The Internet has also changed our generation. Before the Internet, people would take hours to find something they are looking for. They would need to go to the library or somewhere to find their information and then they would have to sort through things to find it. But now with just a click of the mouse, and Google, we can find information in a matter of seconds. I feel that we have just became lazy and gave up trying to find things the proper way. Not everything you read on Google is correct but we believe it is because its easy to find.
Without technology our world we be very different today. In some ways good, and in some ways bad. I believe that our generation needs a wake up call to help us stop being lazy and put some effort into our work.

writing and technology
Technology such as the Internet has had a large impact on writing, both good and bad. One good impact would be that the research necessary for someone to write would be much easier to access. Whether it is facts for non-fiction literature, or simply inspiration for a unique fiction novel.
Then there's the technology that the writers actually use to write with. Thsi includes Microsoft Word and Publisher. As technology advances so do these. This is an example of how technology helps writing. As these technologies advance it becomes easier for the writer to actually write. For instance, Microsoft Word has spell check, which coincidentally not only helps with spelling but also grammar as well. It also allows us to change font and style (design) of the paper, as well as add pictures from clip art or the Internet.
Technology has overall helped writing in a large way. It has made it easier to write a paper as well as edit one. As long as technology keeps advancing, so will writing.
The internet has changed the ways of research and analysis. Time is saved with the help of the internet. It is much easier to just sit at a computer and spend about ten minutes clicking through some Google sites and find the information needed rather than walk to the library and have to look up the serial number of the books then find them then sit down read them, copy what it is you need to know as where on the internet you could just print it out. The internet is the new improved library.
There are many programs that specialize in helping any kind of writing. Almost every computer and laptop comes with some kind of word idea to type out whatever is needed to be typed. There are many different formatting defaults that are automatically involved in the programs. Spell check is one of those defaults that is a life safer a majority of the time. If a word is spelt wrong it is as easy pressing the spell check button to fix it. Another default on almost all writing programs is the sentence fragment default. If one of the sentences in a typed piece does not make sense, the sentence fragment default tells the typist and allows them to fix it.
Word programs are also a way to be more creative with your writing. Some programs come with thesauruses, making it easier for the writer to come up with a non repetitive piece. Other programs allow the writer to paste pictures into the piece. All programs come with style changes. Font size, color and actual font can help the piece show what exactly it is that the piece is saying. Style almost always makes the piece better. Many people are visual learners so when a piece not only talks with style but also shows some style it helps those learners understand better what is being talked about.
Without the advancement in technology, writing would not be able to be as creative as it is today. Through the help of special formatting programs, that usually come with all computers and laptops, and the internet’s amazing way to surf the World Wide Web in seconds and find the result you’re looking for writing could not be better than it is today.
Technology Vs. Writing
After reading this prompt I realized how much technology and writing does go hand in hand but also how it has made it so much easier for people living today. More examples of this is the fact throughout your paper now with the technology we have you are able to cut and paste anything you want throughout your paper and put it anywhere else in your paper. Also with the technology we have you can save your work in easy to access formats, and save things such as pictures that you may need to incorporate in your paper. The one downfall of our technology today that goes with writing is when you do not save your work and you may have like a computer crash or your power may go out which in that case if you did not save your work you will end up losing all of your work.
Some people have chose not to evolve with their writing for example some people still choose to write their essays on paper or write just about anything on paper. Some people still think it's better to write out everything on paper and there is nothing wrong with this because with this way you still have the option of going back and erasing things but you do not have the option of copying and pasting things from way back when in your essay but you also do not have the risk of losing your work due to your computer messing up.
In the end I am glad with the way technology has affected writing and how it has made writing so much easier and so much more efficient to write. I think that writing is going to keep evolving and keep getting more efficient as the years go on and I am almost positive that they will make it easier to write essays.
Word processors have a different setup then Microsoft word; therefore we have to think differently when writing through this.
Frankly.. the paper hand out confused the crap out of me. I didnt know what it was trying to say, therefore i had a very hard time trying to write a paper about something I couldn't comprehend. So put this is in the bottom of your rankings, but at least I attempted it.
I wish we would get an easy topic that I can actaully write something decent about, like our worst date topic.
Technology v. Writing
Rather than simply writing one font in an 8 ½ by 11 square box, the opportunity for creativity in the presence of the writing is endless. While writing on a piece of paper each individual has their own handwriting and cannot change how they write. When typewriters were invented, a generic font was introduced and eliminated change in font between typewriters. Only with the use of a technology found in computers has this been made possible. Prior to putting words on a paper the author must consider what font they will be using. Although for formal essays it is still typical to Times New Roman size 12, the choices for other forms of writing do not end there. Other styles of font are used for creativity or to draw attention to the writing. However, these forms of font tend to be more difficult to use and are avoided in professional writing. The next step in the decision making process is what format the author will be writing in. Technology has allowed the author to design their paper in multiple arrangements. The format is designed through creating text boxes that can be shaped to whatever form desired. This also opens the opportunity for the writer to include multiple passages on a single page, or perhaps leave space for a photo or graph. Being given the opportunity to design the page and passage of writing in multiple ways has given the author unique creativity they were not able to obtain before technology.
The author of article “Is it new? Is it multi? Or is it a return: A reflection on the relationship between writing and technology” stated that, “Literacy via technology involves more than just an ability to negotiate words. A writer must also be able to grasp the compositional possibilities allowed by such a program, which involves technical literacy.” This statement refers to those who do not understand the numerous possibilities offered through technology. Before computers opened the door to technical literacy, writers did not need a manual to layout each step of writing. Today, with so many options to changing the format, font, adding pictures or graphs the author may become confused at where to start. However, in today’s society it is becoming clearly evident that individuals are being taught at a young age how to use technology while writing. Yet, before computers people did not have the technology and are now forced to adapt. Not only is it and adaptation to the paper itself, but ways in which information is found has become as quick as one click of a button.
Source material is the information used to support and fill a paper. In contrast to using library resource, most find the internet their main source of information. Although this may be more convenient there tend to be many flaws. One defect of technology is the reliability of the source. Even if the information is posted to the internet it does not insure credibility and while researching for a paper, writers tend to be mislead by deceiving facts. There is also another flaw when it comes to incorporating the text within the writing and how it should be manipulated. Some information found on the internet should be used for their material properties, while others used for their content. This is difficult to differentiate when the two articles have completely different approaches to a topic. Lastly, it is critical while writing to avoid plagiarism and with so many resources out there it is required to include a works cited that lists each source. Books, journals, and websites are just a few resources that can be found on the internet as a result of technology, must be used correctly when entered into a piece of writing.
Regardless of the level a writer is, all writers can agree that technology has inevitably changed writing. Whether the style or format, technical literacy, or resource the use of technology on computers has opened options to creativity, efficiency, and lack of error. As writing continues to develop through technological change, there will be an importance to continually adapt as a writer. Yet, the importance of this means of communications will remain unaltered.
Technology and Writing
writing and technology
Where would we be without technology? All of us use technology in our everyday lives and probably could not live without it. Our everyday lives are influenced by and enhanced by technology. None of us have had to live through a life without having access to information only feet away from us. A few aspect of technology that has enhanced our everyday lives is the access to the internet, formatting, and lastly templates.
First off, the access to internet is only feet away from us at all times. Having this access has helped our writing immensely. I say this because research can happen much more easily than it used to be. Instead of reading through books and magazines, we now just click buttons and search the internet for information. A big time saver and much more information is presented to us on the World Wide Web. Without internet access, our writing wouldn’t be as good as it is these days.
Next, formatting has become a lot easier than before. Software is now on every computer which makes formatting of our essays and writing simple. Design possibilities are endless now that technology is so advanced, making everyone’s writing more interesting and help look better. Formatting is another aspect of technology that has enhanced writing.
Lastly, templates reduced the time it took writers in the past to figure out what template they wanted. Instead of searching through manuals for directions, the access is much easier with the advanced technology. Copying and pasting material cuts down the time for people who are slow typers. It is also easier to save our work now that we have hard drives and other methods of saving. Reviewing our work also is easier and more efficient with spell check. All in all, technology has made our lives a lot better in terms of writing papers and essays.

Technology and Writing
Technology can provide many outlets for an author to focus their style. Fonts, layouts, templates, styles, tables, illustrations, texts, themes backgrounds, and arrangements all can help an author to create the most interesting and creative essay they would every imagine. The many different possibilities of images and clip art can work with an essays purpose and help to argue its truth. Word pressers can also allow another to create a more professional looking essay. Also the amenities that technology can provide an essay can also help another create their perfect essay. Having access to the abundance of information on the internet and in books can provide so much knowledge that can be incorporated in to an essay. This can give an author more credible facts and interesting, entertaining information to include in an essay.
As writers determine their topic and purpose to as essay it is often times more difficult to portray their creativity and emotion through their writing by the constraints that a word processer can create. Technology can bring structure and formats to an essay that could limit a author to just to the black and white typical boring essay. Having an esthetically pleasing essay can take a large toll in the style of the essay. Also books, journals, and websites are all other sources that can be enhanced with technology. These technologies can influence writing with constraints I can limit the amount of creativity a writer has by enforcing the facts. Also this may reduce an author to quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing their way into insanity.
Essays that have many facts and figures and are on white paper with black text in Times New Roman font size 12 can be so dull and boring just by looking at them. Essays with colors or pictures, themes or backgrounds look so much more interesting and appealing to read. Technology and writing go hand in hand now in this new era. Technology can both help and hurt a writer in their creativity, style and information. The determining factor to these problems is the author’s view of what they are writing about or how they want it to be seen.

Technologies and writing
In my own writing alone I have noticed that I can be much more creative when I use my laptop then when I am hand writing a paper. First off when I’m on my laptop I don’t have to play it safe, I can use big words in my papers and if I spell them wrong I can go to spell check and correct them. When I hand write a paper I tend to stay away from the big words because I don’t want my spelling errors to take away from what I’m saying and take the reader’s attention off of my paper and to my spelling errors. Typing a paper also makes the paper more clear, as in you don’t have to worry about penmanship and making sure your paper is legible to your reader because every word comes out perfectly typed. And staying on topic with font, the computer also allows you to change the font to a different theme if that would make the paper for catchy or easier to read for the reader.
There are many other things that can be done with technology to allow a person to be a better writer. If there is something important in a piece of writing of mine like directions to something I can bold the text so it sticks out to the reader and puts a lot of emphasis on that word or sentence so the reader doesn’t over look it or forget about it. I also make the title to a paper look flashy and eye catching if that’s appropriate. But most of all I use technology to make my writing as professional as I can make it. It allows for people to take me seriously on what I’m saying and not judge me on my penmanship, my style of writing, or my spelling and grammatical errors.

the writing assignment this week was pretty easy however, i am realizing that writing itself is waaaayyyy more than what i thought. all these terms & expensive books that really explain what goes into becoming a great writer, not just by what you write but how you put it together.... properly.
class itself is becoming more interesting as we go into the semester. everyone seems pretty cool. sometimes i think i need a remedial english class because of some of the terms trease uses. but i shall learn!!! lol.
top 3
it`s harder to say a bottom 3 because the rest needed some help.
in choosing my top 3, i looked for the writer's clarity and did they say what was inportant to them when writing. also, if they had a nice transition into the next paragraph.
