No matter what activity you’re involved in, whether it’s just a sport or school, were always being judged. Our tastes differ from person to person and when given an objective to accomplish, everyone will go in a different path. The most important thing to a judge is uniqueness. Uniqueness is shown all the time in the shows “Project Runway” and “Top Chief.” The contestants are challenged every episode to be unique and give the judges something that they haven’t seen before. The same thing goes for writing. Don’t be afraid to be different, to write the first thing comes to mind and work from there. Judges don’t want to read or critique something that is plain and boring. Be different and if you feel like you put forth all the effort you could into your final piece, even if the judges don’t like it, you know you did your best. The contestants on these shows work as hard as they can because there given a once in a lifetime opportunity. We also are given a once in a lifetime opportunity, make the best of it.

When asked to judge something a person will first relate it to themselves (what do they personally enjoy about it). However, to really judge something or evaluate it you have to realize what makes it its own. You aren't going to win any contests making something that everyone has seen already or knows, it must be unique. This quality is shown most in competitions where being the same means defeat. In "Project Runway" and "Top Chef" this is no different. Every week the contestants on these shows are asked to create something from nothing and, more importantly, to make it there own. This is also true in writing. Although everyone might not like it, being unique in writing is crucial. As a judge of anything you don't want to be assessing the same thing over and over again, you want variety. These game shows push people to their creative edge, and it's there that people really realize what they are capable of, why not do the same for our writing?
