Weekly Blog #5

this week in English we wrote a paper on our worst date that we have had. This was my first time every writing about something that personally happened to me, since around 9th grade. It was a change in the typical so i liked this assignment. If this assignment didn't happen i honestly wouldn't share my worst date to everyone, so on the other side it was a challenge to just write about something embarrassing that happened to myself.

Worst Date Paper

Having a date makes a person feels great about themselves. The girl takes hours too look perfect for their date. She makes sure every little detail is perfect on their outfit. While the guy makes sure he smells good and makes sure to take a shower. On a date there a lot of thoughts going through a persons head. They are making sure they are impressing the other person and trying hard to make a good impression. What if this was not the case? On my worst date the guy was rude. He showed up late, smelt bad, and we went to the worst place to ever go on a date.
I was super excited to be going on a date with this guy my friend introduced me to. His name was Trevor and he was a year younger than me. At first I did not want to go on a date with him because of his age but finally my friend convinced me to go on a date with him. He wore torn up pants and a dirty hat on our date. We talk a little bit on the phone before we went on a date so I thought it would make me less nervous. We planed to have dinner at seven o’ clock but he showed up at seven thirty. I was nervous enough but this made me even more nervous because how was I supposed to act when I was upset. Finally, I relaxed enough to ask him where we were going. He told me we were going to Los Banditos. I like Los Banditos but there is one that is extremely dirty, I rayed that we did not go there. After a twenty minute drive unfortunately, we arrived at the dirty Los Banditos.
I asked him why he chose this Los Banditos and he said it was his favorite. I was horrified to go in and eat. I knew I was going to be uncomfortable, but I went in anyways because he was kind of cute. We went in, sat down and ordered our food. When the food arrived at our table I was disgusted. The rice was runny the beans were over cooked and my chicken looked more like potatoes. It was sickening. I was so disgusted it was hard for me to start a conversation with him. He was rude when we talked. I would ask him a question and he would make me feel like I was stupid for not knowing the answer. To make it even worse, he knocked his water onto my leg and acted like it never happened.
The only think that I liked about this date was that I went home. He made me pay for my own dinner. I have no problem paying for myself but it is common courtesy to offer to pay. I would not have let him pay but it is the thought that counts.
After the date was over he tried to text me but I would not respond to his text. Any guy who would treat me like that is not worth my time. He did not even think about how I felt which I found tremendously impolite. I feel bad that I wasted his time but he should have put more thought into our date. I was a little discouraged that our date did not work out. I question myself if maybe I did something that made him act inappropriate on our date.
The thing that surprised me about this date was that he fit my standards on paper but not in person. When we would talk on the phone before our date, he was super nice to me. He acted like he cared about me. He would ask me how my day was and he would always say good night and good morning to me. Also, he was cute but I guess I should know that looks are not everything. I got my hopes up on this date only to be let down.
I am proud that I stuck to my morals on this date. Although I was mad at him for taking me to this horrible restaurant, I did not say anything rude to him because I could tell that he was happy and as long as someone is happy I am satisfy. He was rude to me while he was talking to me but I did not raise my voice at him or tell him he needed to stop. I sat there and took it because I find that starting a fight will not solve anything. He probably would have been too self absorbed to acknowledge how I felt. I did feel that this date was important for me after because I learned from it. I learned that a person can not judge someone just by a text. You need to get to know them first before you can learn if you have a connection because people lie to you.
This date may have horrible but I did learn from it. He was rude and selfish. I did not have fun on this date and wanted it to end almost the minute it started. At the time I wish I had not followed my morals and said something to him, but looking back I’m glad that I stuck to my morals and kept my mouth shut. Being me is more important than putting someone in their place. I am glad that I never have to go through that date again.

weekly blog

In class this week we learned all different sorts of analytical questions. This got me to thinking that if we asked ourselves these questions after major events, we could almost be sure to learn from our mistakes instead of just going in one ear and out the other.

Weekly Blog #4

This week we have been ranking and changing different writing prompts. While doing this it makes me think of how we all think so differently and have our own views on life and what happened all around us. The way we all write our essay prompt is how we viewed the assignment given. So then when we all try to re write the other prompts and they just turn into messes because we don’t know where the original author was coming from when they wrote it.

THE WORST DATE YOU'VE EVER HAD WRITERS CHALLENGE

For this writing prompt write about the worse date that you have ever had. You must tell what made the date the worse date that you have ever had and explain the reasons in detail. The reader must feel the frustration and irratation that you had on this date because it was so bad. Give all the details and make sure that they are appropriate. This must be very descriptive and give the reader a sense of pathos. This should not be just a paragraph it should include correct grammer, direct quotes, and descriptions from the individuals personal standpoint. This is a challenge so the person with the most descriptive and interesting story will win. The judges will be looking for interesting stories that caught their attention, grammer, and writers connection and honesty to the story. If the individual has never had a date, write about someone elses experience with a bad date that you know the details of.

Assignment 4

My challenge to the class would be to write a one page paper, in which you reflect upon and describe what you have learned so far in English 101 and what you hope to learn in the coming weeks. Using examples from the work that has been done so far in class to.

Assignment Four

For the prompt assigned write about the worst meal you have ever had. The paper must tell why it was the worst meal. The reader should feel like they have just tasted the meal themselves because of all the detail that you include. In the paper tell about the meal from the moment you sat down to the time you got up after attempting to eat it. This does not have a length requirement how ever it must be detailed and must explain the meal from start to finish, so a five sentenced paragraph will not work. Each sense must be involved. This is a descriptive essay.

Assignment 4 Challenge

This challenge will do exactly that, challenge the class. This is meant to make everyone use their own ideas and create an essay totally different from what any ones else will have written in the class. Everyone will need to look and read over pages 17 - 35 in the DK handbook and utilize ANYTHING they find to their advantage in this challenge. Good Luck!

assignment 4

For the prompt, you must think of a song that either relates to your life, or is a memorable song that means a lot to you and explain in detail how it relates to you. Use the lyrics to help show the readers how it is important to you in one or two paragraphs. Share examples or stories to make it more clear to the readers.

essay option

Write an essay about what you feel is your greatest accomplishment. Be sure to include as much detail as possible, don’t tell the story but instead show it. Include what lessons you learned from that experience, how it has changed/shaped you as a person, and why it was your greatest accomplishment.

Assignment 4

My challenge for the class will be testing exactly what we learned while doing our previous assignments. The challenge will be to read the second novel in our First Year Composition book by Annie Dillard, and analyze each symbol in the novel, Total Eclipse, such as; the vegetable clown head, the men in the bar, and the paragraph in the novel stating we all must bring our wealth to surface and use it in a way everyone on earth can benefit from it. After reading the entire novel interpret exactly what each symbol means to Dillard and give your own interpretation of each symbol and how they played a role in the novel for you. Our previous assignments have prepared us for this by teaching us how to get into the mindset of a judge, and being able to read into something more in depth then we could when we started this class.

Assignment 4

For my assignment I challenge you to write a three paragraph paper about an event that you were either nervous or scared about going into. This could be something like your first day of school, or a sporting event you were apart of. Here's the twist, each paragraph has its own theme. In the first paragraph you must talk about how you were feeling prior to the event, and why? Also, include what you did to overcome these fears or nerves. In the second paragraph tell me about the event itself. How did your feelings change once you were in the moment? In the last paragraph explain how you felt after the the fact. Were you actually more nervous than you needed to be? not nervous enough? Be sure to include lots of details and specific's so that the reader feels as if they were actually there with you.

Assignment 4: Throwing Down the Gauntlet

My challenge for our class for writing a paper would be to write a paper about something that has meaning towards you or something that you have heard that has never made sense to you and something that you know does not have a write answer but can be explained in many ways. I think we should have it where you explain a inspirational quote that has some meaning towards you.

Assignment 4

For my assignment you must write a paper about someone who has changed your life. I feel that a paper shouldn't have a length because you know when you're done because sometimes with a length a person will say anything just to fill the paper. However, this paper must included detail. You want to make the read feel how you feel. You must include how they changed your life, and why. Also, include how you are different today and if you like the change that was made. You must include a quote in your paper. You must know how to cite the quote properly too. This paper is meant to make you think and to make you put your feeling on paper. Make this paper about you. Play with it make the reader cry, laugh or however you felt. Have fun with it but make sure you have good structure, grammar, and flow. Don't forget to meet all the requirements.

assignment 4 -

my assignment/challenge would be to describe a situation that you could have used better judgement with. it could be a long-living regret or just something that had an impact on their life. they would have to say why they would choose to do "a" instead of "b". i would probably ask questions like ; how old were you? why did you do it? why would you change the decision you made? i would want them to think about why they made that decision at that time and why they would change it now. normally at the time we make decisions, we do it for a certain reason. i would want them to go back to that mind-frame and explain their thoughts at the time of the situation.

Assignment 4

It felt like I had been writing for an eternity; page after page filled with the text I threw onto the paper. Essays are what really kill me. They seem to take every ounce of energy I have to write a half way decent essay. The biggest challenge is writing the long essays that are more than three or four pages. If I had to make a criteria for a challenging essay my challenge would be to write an essay only using adjectives longer than four words. People always use boring adjects such as good or great in their writing to describe various things. Not being able to use these boring words would help because not only would your essay come alive with excitement, but at the same time you would be expanding your vocabulary. Also every sentence must be longer than 15 words and every other sentence must have a comma in it somewhere. Although these challenges sound difficult, at the end of all of it, you will be a much better writer.

weekley blog

In class this week we learned about how important first sentences are in a paper. That got me to thinking about how a first sentence is like a first impression. Your first impression tells those you meet what you are like and if they want to hang out with you. The first sentence in an essay tells the reader what the paper is about and if it's interesting enough to read. This is just another way english relates to the real life.

Assignment 4

For my challenge, you must write a five-paragraph paper. The paper must be about a moment that stands out in your mind, something that you can’t stop thinking about. It can be a moment in your life or simply a scene from a television show. The paper must be filled with detail so the reader can feel like he or she was there with you. However this is not enough to get an A. To get an A on this assignment in the first paragraph you must include a quote from someone you admire (it can be anyone). In the second paragraph you must include a joke of any sort. In the third paragraph you must cite a Disney movie. In the fourth paragraph make a reference to a high school crush. The concluding sentence in the last paragraph must be a comedic quote from someone famous. The paper must be in MLA format, you may refer to the DK Handbook to find all of the MLA requirements.

Writters challenge

Plagiarism is a very big deal in college writting and is commonly defined as theft at UWM its considered to be academic misconduct and is subjected to the UW-system of rules. Since teachers/professors are always claiming they can spot plagiarism as easily as tieing their shoes; your job/challenge is to test their plargiasm spotting skills. For this assignment, you must read about the plagiarism policy on pages 12-13 in the blue hand book, then you must pick a topic of your choice you must find an article, report, paper etc. on this article and print it off. Then using the same topic write a paper about it using your own ideas. Then it's up to the teacher and classmates to determine which was the printed plagiarised article and which was the actual students writting. By doing this challenge we're going to get a better understanding of plagiarism and how to aviod it.

Writing Challenge

Your challenge is to write a five paragraph essay about your first day of college at UW-Milwaukee. You must explain your experience on campus and what classes you had. As if that isn’t enough, the first body paragraph must include your favorite color. The second body paragraph can only be six sentences long, and the third body paragraph will include one in-text citation. Use the DK handbook as your reference for MLA citations. The reader should get the feel of what it was like to be you on the first day of school and also see that you followed the directions.

Assignment 4-Throwing down the Gauntlet

For my assignment I would like everyone to write a Revenge Essay. In the essay, write about a time when you got revenge on someone in any way at all. Make it a good story line and include descriptive details that will keep the reader hooked and feel like they were really there with you when you got the revenge. Explain what caused you to want the revenge, how you got it, and how you felt after you got this revenge. In this essay, you must use quotes from some of the conversation going on while you're getting your revenge, at least 2 quotes in every paragraph. This is a chance for you to use a personal life experience and tell it in your own words and share it with your peers. Also, I would like you to use the DK Handbook in this assignment. Turn to page 25 and write out a schedule about how you are going to write this paper and please staple that to the back of your paper before handing it in! Have fun with this paper and topic and make sure at least 2 of your peers proofread it before handing in the rough draft.

Throwing down the Gauntlet

For my challenge, you need to is read page 25 in your DK hand book, and examine how the person wrote down a schedule for there research paper. What are your thoughts on doing this for every paper that you have due. Is it a good or bad idea? If you think its a bad idea, why, and what would do you instead (if anything)? If you think that its a good idea, do you do it, or will you now? I would like you to write own your thoughts and explain your point of view on writing down schedules for papers throughout the year.

Weekly Blog #3

For this past week in English class i think our topic is a very specific topic. From the first days of watching Top Chief in class then as our homework, to watch three episodes of Project Runway. Now we are discussing how the judging on the TV shows compare to how the teachers will be judging our final portfolios. I think that this topic a very well thought out assignment for comparing and contrasting, because people would not usually see the similarities between the two of them, without really thinking about. Its a good challenge for us at students, and makes us think of the teachers point of view when it comes to grading our final portfolios so that as we are writing them we can make sure we do what they are looking for correctly.

Weekly Blog #3

Comparing and contrasting different aspects of life and different tasks that come along can help a person make the best decisions. In class we have been comparing and contrasting challenges and assignments. So it has got me thinking of all the decisions I make in a day and how my day would be drastically altered if I chose another option. Thinking of pros and cons, costs and benefits can help everyone to make the right and or best decisions for them. Typically, especially when I have a tough decision to make I think about or possibly even write down all of the positive and negatives in a situation. By doing that I can make the most reliable and responsible decision to enhance my life.

Assignment 4: Throwing Down the Gauntlet

In this challenge you will need to read page 267 in your DK Handbook, then read a story of your choice from the First Year Composition Reader.Taking what you learned about styles write a few paragraphs talking about the authors sense of style (i.e. does the piece feel lush and detailed, or quick and precise? How was this story supposed to be perceived was it supposed to be happy, sad, suspenseful?). In each paragraph be sure to include a short quote to support your thinking.

Compare and Contrast

The challenges on the reality tv shows "Project Runway" and "Top Chef" have many things in common with the sample textbook assignments, although in some ways they are also different. One of the biggest things the two have in common is that either the contestants on the shows or the writers correctly identified the topic and followed the given instructions. Another common aspect is, judges for the shows would look for personal taste and uniqueness in the contestant work, just like it is important to add a writers on personal touch to their writings. Spelling and grammar is a very frequent aspect in the sample writings, although this really has nothing to do with making a dress or cooking a meal, it can be related to the proper way to go about ones work as well as the quality of it.

Although there were few differences, a major one is writers providing examples, facts, or citations in their work. In the tv shows there is no need to provide facts or where they received their design or recipe, because for the most part contestants on the shows worked from scratch to create their own pieces of work. Which I also believe is something that was overlooked in the tv shows. Judges should go more in depth with their questioning for the contestants to find out what inspired them to create their work, or where they gained the experience for their project. Judges assume that viewers of the shows have experience or knowledge of the given topic, which for most cases is probably not true.

Compare/Contrast

While reading some English textbook assignment samples I definitely noticed some similarities to the reality shows we were asked to watch, Top Chef and Project Runway. One of the first similarities I noticed was Both show's and assignments were judged based out the quality of the work. If I were to hand in an assignment that was clearly rushed through and had no thought behind it I would receive a failing grade. Whereas if I handed in a very thought provoking essay I'd get a higher grade. In the T.V shows the lesser quality entries were up for elimination, while the higher quality one's receive immunity from the next round. Another similarity is that specific task were assigned. In English you are given a specific topic to write about. How you write it is were you can get unique but the underline principles are the same. Just like in the show were the contestants are given a specific category for their end product to fall under. In Top Chef they were asked to create a dessert. Each contestant's end product was different, but they were all pastries.
One of the major differences between show's and English assignments was in the show there is no room for error. screw up one challenge and that could mean they end of you. If I were to put forth good effort but just messed up an assignment I could talk to my professor and arrange something.

Assignment 3

Project Runway and Top Chief have many similar requirements to our assignments. They both have to be done to our best ability. If a student is to do sloppy work they most likely wouldn't receive a good grade on their project, and if a contestant on the show did poor work they could be illuminated from the show. Also, we both are required to put thought into our work. If we don't put time into our work it will probably be poorly done. Another similarity between the shows and a students work is, they both are being judged. They both receive criticism. They also both have requirements. For example on Project Runway the contestants were told to make an elegant look for a famous actress, and the person would did not follow directions was illuminated. If a students wrights a paper and does not meet the requirements they most likely will get points off and possibly fail. There is also a dead line for both the shows and the student. If the contestant does not finish in time they fail, and if a student does not complete an assignment on time it is late and will receive a lower grade. There are so many similarities between the shows and a students work.

Like there are many similarities between Project Runway and Top Chief and a students work, there are also differences. One difference is on Project Runway and Top Chief they are given only a few hours to do their challenge and they have to create it in a short amount of time. With that time they are allowed to put their own twist onto their creations. For a student however, they are given enough time to do exactly what a teacher want not really allowing them to exactly how they want it to be. Everyone has different ideas about things. Another difference between the two topics are as a student we always have a chance to do better, but on the shows if you do bad and get kicked off that's it that person is done. There are many similarities between the two topics but there are certainly are difference two.

Compare and Contrast

When it comes to comparing Top Chef and Project Runway together it is like comparing apples, to apples. In both shows the contestants are chosen because they already have a well documented background in either art they may be performing. The contestants of each show are each under pressure from the judges and deadlines of the given task, and are all graded on a similar scale. Each contestant has to create a product that is original, well made/cooked, and meets the specifications of the given task. This relates to how the portfolio judges have to grade us. They are given a product we made to our best ability under pressures and guidelines, just as the contestants on each television show. The differences, however, of the shows besides just the obvious(on one show they cook and on the other they make clothes) there are other differences like in Project Runway the contestants are given a task to create something that has not been created before. Something completely original that is out there, but not so out there that's the concept is not understood or so the product is not too gaudy. While on Top Chef the contestants are given a task to create something that's been made before and that there is directions for if they do not know how to make it. These differences of the shows also compare to how each and every one of our essays will be. Some people will write a conventional essay that is not out there and is just average, and some will go for it and either get an "A" or crash and burn. There is a fine line between the two and I think sometime this year we will learn how to determine where exactly that line is.

assignment 3

In the television series of Top Chief and Project Runway, the contestants are judged in some similar and some different ways. First off, these shows both stress uniqueness and individuality. In top chief, the contestants need to make food that is unique and still tastes good, and in Project Runway the contestants need to design dress and clothes that haven’t been seen before. Next, the judges both look to see if the work done is quality work and not something just throw together. This ties back into writing because the judges of our papers look for quality work and if the work is unique. Now on to the differences between the two television series. Both shows expect different things from the contestants, just like our instructors expect different work from us. Also, as a student we always have another chance to improve our work, while in the television shows, you mess up, you might not get another opportunity to show your work off to the judges. All in all, the similarities between the television shows and students work surpass the slim differences.

Comparing and Contrasting

There are many similarities between reality shows such as Top Chef and Project Runway and English textbook assignments. One similarity is that while in an English class, your writing gets judged or graded and in reality shows the contestants get judged or graded. Another thing that they have in common is that both reality shows and English textbooks grade based on the quality of the work. In both of them the better quality the better chances you have as to being safe for elimination or getting an A on a paper. Top Chef and Project Runway and English textbooks ask for a specific task, whether it be to produce a gown for the Emmy's, make a delicious meal or write a 250 word summary on the how the book can relate to everyday life. Overall there are similarities between Reality shows and English textbooks.

There are a few differences between reality shows and English textbook assignments. The first is the fact if you screw up or do not impress the judges in a reality show, you will be sent home, whereas in an English class if you do not impress your teacher, he/she will be able to tell you how to fix it so so next time you fix your mistake. Another difference is the fact that reality shows have more broad topic such as "design a gown for an award show" in Project Runway, as where in an English class you are given much more specific topics such as having a certain length requirement or only allowing it to be in 3rd person, past tense. There are certainly some difference between reality shows and English textbooks.

Comparing and Contrasting

Like in Project Runway and Top Chef many of the directions ask similar things. For instance the assignments that are asked of in the composition textbooks and readers ask for specific explanations and criteria, similar to the shows asking for certain items and criteria. What is assumed in both the readings and textbooks and along with the two reality shows is that quality work is brought forth. Whether it be writing, making food or an astounding outfit. Another Striking similarity between the textbook and readers versus the two reality television shows is that both the contestants and students are constantly being judged and put under pressure to do their absolute best work.

Unlike in Project Runway and Top Chef the textbooks and readers ask you to base much of the assignments from previous discussions and readings, and imply strict guidelines. However In the two reality shows much of the work that is done is based solely on the creators own ideas and imagination, with a very broad outline of what is expected. I believe something that is overlooked in the writing of the textbooks and readings is that there is never much room for writing that comes from imagination, don’t get me wrong writing could still be unique and fun to read but there is a source for all the writing work that is being asked. Different from the creators of the reality shows there imagination and creativity can be shown much more through the work that they do.

Assignment 3

Reality television challenges and assignments given in the composition textbook are extremely similar with a few differences. One of the differences is that the challenges on reality television shows, such as project runway and top chef, are much more broad then the textbook assignments. This gives the contestants much more room to improvise and make it their own; while English students are given a strict set of guidelines to follow; for instance, a paper must be a certain amount of pages or words. Another difference is that if a contestant makes a fatal mistake they must go home without a second chance. Whereas the student is graced with the opportunity to improve and make the next assignment better, if not given the chance to rewrite the one the messed up. Furthermore one never knows if the judges really are judging based on quality or what they think will bring in the ratings. I can only imagine how nerve-racking that must be for the contestants, seeing as how a teacher/professor only looks for quality, because he/she doesn’t have to worry about ratings or the opinions of others. Even though reality television show challenges and assignments given in the composition textbook differ they have a lot more similarities then people think. An obvious similarity is that both the contestants and English student have to try and impress the judge/teacher. They must all do this by staying inside the boundaries that were set for the assignment, making sure that their work is quality, and lastly making the challenge/assignment given unique. If the contestant/student does not make their work stand out above all the rest and really speak to the judge/teacher then they can expect to be safe and receive a mediocre grade. Another similarity is that both on television and in class everyone is given a time limit. Lastly everyone, no matter what the assignment may be, must give it his or her best shot. For the reason that if one does not try their hardest there is no way that they will pass the assignment/challenge, and will suffer the consequences of poor work.

Judging: Compare and Contrast

Judging all together has many similarities. Whether youre the judge reviewing a students work to pass an English class or youre a judge on a reality show, the basic aspects of judging the work is similar. They are similar in the way that youre given an outline of requirements you must meet in order to pass the course and receive a credit or in the case of a reality show, project runway for example, youre given what type of look to design. Also, most judges are looking for unique and creative pieces of work. Your writing must have it’s own voice and should be logical. Designers must be creative and have there own touch to every design because no one wants a piece of clothing that’s already been made. Allthough there are many similarities between these two judging panels, there are also differences. For instance, when a judge is reading a students essays, they must be able to understand the piece of work theyre reading. When a judge is reviewing a dress that a designer has designed, they don’t really have to understand it. As long as the clothing is unique, creative and is pleasing to the eye but still meets the look the judges want, the designers pretty much safe from being eliminated.

Comparison/Contrast the two

For the Project Runway show, the judging was on outfits, which in many ways is different than papers. When a judge is holding a contest for designers, they look for colors, and how it looks on the model, they take note on if they followed the assignment or if they went on a tangent. While a judge is looking a paper they are looking for spelling, and grammar and punctuation.
While in both situations judges are looking for structure (in the outfit and in the essay formation), if its fits well (on the model, and in the topic given), does it show personality or not. These items are important for both the essay judges and the Runway judges.
Over looking happens more than one may think or assume that it would or does. I think that the view from the writes or designers aspect is over looked most of the time. When a reader first reads the sentence "John had had many calls today" you will first see a sentence error. Yet when you read it again you may catch yourself pausing at just the right moment in the sentence to hear it make sense. I think that if judges try to see the item which they are judging they will understand the writer more, and that in turns helps them see where they are coming from while writing the paper.

compare/contrast

Everything in life can be either compared or contrasted from one another. For instance writting papers in English class can be both compared and contrasted from that of a reality T.V. show. Using what we were to read for an example. Each assignment whether it be a challange or a paper, is given out with guidelines that one must follow. Within these guidelines, even though everyone is given the same you must come up with something different and unique from everyone elses. In both you are also given a time frame in which the challage, or paper must be compeleted with your best work at hand. In both papers and reality shows, you must think about the challange carefully and plan your excuction as to make sure that youll be finished in time. Although you are supposed to think outside the box, in both cases you must not stray to far away from topic, or challange. Although they are the same in many ways writting a paper in an english class and doing a challange on a reality show are different in many aspects as well. Such as on a reality show you're going to be judged differently because of the fact they need to keep the audience engaged. If they're were a typical outcome everytime no one would want to watch. When a professor is reading a paper, the person writting the paper is the only one trying to engage someone, the reader. The professor doesnt have to worry about whats going to get good ratings on T.V. or putting a twist on their judging. Also the outcome of the juding for both is completely different. If you write a bad paper, you get a bad grade, you can improve it next time. However if you have a bad challange you can get sent home with no chance to improve.
So all in papers and challanges in T.V. shows are the same challange wise but not so much juding wise.

Compare/Contrast-Reality TV/English

Challenges in reality shows like Project Runway and Top Chef are very similar in some ways, and yet so different in others. They are the same in the aspect that they are given a challenge and expected to follow certain guidelines and meet the criteria while doing it. They will be judged on either their food, item of clothing, or paper in the end and the judge will make sure that all of the directions were followed and that all the criteria was met in the final outcome. Even though there are a lot of guidelines in any challenge, you want to stand out and make the final outcome your own. Making a good impression on the judge is key, and if your piece stands out in the judges mind, that means you succeeded. Another similarity is that everyone in the show, or in the class, is given the same challenge with the same guidelines, and yet everyone has a different outcome. There are however some differences between assignments given on shows and ones given in the classroom; one of the reasons these challenges are different is the TV shows are much more broad and not as detailed as the directions given on writing a paper or an essay. Also, if a student doesn't impress a teacher with their paper they aren't kicked out of the class, whereas in the TV shows if you don't impress the judges well enough you are sent home. When really compared, there are a lot more similarities in assignments students are given, and ones that are given on TV shows then most people might think. All these challenges are all trying to get people to get out of their comfort zones and make them work to their full potential and see what kind of entree, outfit, or paper one can create.

Compare and Contrast

The challenges presented on reality tv are similar yet very different to those assigned from a composition textbook. Each set standards that must be met; however, the reality tv guidelines are much more broad. This is a good thing when it comes to clothing and food because it leaves a lot of room for creativity and self expression. Still, it is more difficult in the end to know what the judge’s verdict will be. Personally, I feel for a formal essay it is important to have strict guidelines so the writer knows exactly what direction their paper should take. At the same time I also think this shouldn’t stop a writer from taking risk and making their paper memorable to the judge. Each challenge is similar in the aspect that they must execute their work to the best of its potential, in order to impress the judges. Whether its perfect stitching or perfect spelling, this means leaving no room for error. Another similarity between both an English essay and reality tv challenge is that the individuals are given an idea or a topic that forces them to push their limits and help them improve in what they are doing. Then again, if they fail to meet the expectation they could fail or get eliminated. Still, each contestant or student puts forth a lot of effort and preparation into making the final product worth the hard work. Ultimately, both a challenge for a reality tv show or an English essay can teach a valuable lesson about hard work paying off.

Getting Our Bearings

The judging on Project Runway and Top Chef are the same as the ones in the essay because they are both looking for who went the extra mile who embraced this challenge or this assignment and took the time to find something that not only grabs their attention but they know will grab the majority of the people reading the paper. How these two differ is that in the shows more than not every contestant is going to put their heart and soul into the project or challenge they are given where when your typing an assignment some people may just do what is asked of them and not go that extra mile because they are taught if you follow the directions you will do just fine but in shows like Project Runway they have people always taking risks to separate themselves from the rest of the pack and sometimes they get burned but most of the time they are rewarded where some kids do not want to go the extra mile because they are nervous of being wrong and they may fail. It is assumed by each approach that the contestant or the student will give 100% when writing or taking on a challenge and that they keep an open mind and do not have a horrible attitude going into a challenge. They differ though in the thought process that goes on when writing a paper and when your competing in a challenge. I believe what is overlooked I believe is the abilities people are able to put into a project or challenge some people who are on these shows are better at some things then others and some challenges really bring out a persons attributes where some struggle. This is the same when writing a paper some people have more experience with things and have an easy time with coming up with examples for a paper. The shows like Project Runway and Top Chef focus on the contestants talents and if they are able to perform on a week to week or even sometimes a day to day basis where as a student you have to use your creativeness and even if you have no clue what to write you always are able to think of something and you can use examples from past experiences that you have had.

Assignment 3

In comparing and contrasting Project Runway and Top Chef to our assignments in class i see quite a few similarities as well as connections that i believe don't coincide with each other. First off in both instances the challenges or assignments build on what we already know how to do and which helps develop more complicated composing strategies to help us overcome our challenges. Along with that how well we do on our challenges is a direct relationship with how much effort we contribute. Some other ways that the two are comparative is the fact that both of the challenges focus on detail and understanding. For example a paper you right has to make sense to both you and the reader, and a dress or food you make needs to make sense to both you and the person eating it or judging it. In other words your style has to match what they are asking for. However the shows and the assignments don't exactly go side by side. First off these assignments seem to be so much more descriptive than what they contestants had to work with, which i don't no is a benefit or not because unneeded words can sometimes distract or confuse the contestant in the true objective. Each approach to delivering an assignment or a challenge is trying to tell you in the best way possible to what you need to do to be successful. I believe that the most over-looked part is the fact that they don't give examples to better understand what they are looking for in the challenges. The most successful approach to delivering a challenge i believe is be be very straight forwards and use words that are easy to understand for everyone, and if possible they should try and include examples so the contestants will know exactly what you are looking for and there wouldn't be any confusion.

Challenges v.s. Assignments

The challenges on “Top Chief” and “Project Runway” have both similarities and differences in comparison to the assignments that have been given to English 101 classes. The challenges and assignments can both be viewed as a test or an analysis of the skill level of the contestants or students. For example many of the assignments given to the students require them to read something then reflect or write something and reflect. I feel this demonstrates that the judges of the portfolios at the end of the semester will be really hard to please so right now the professors are attempting to push the idea of first off, using resources and research to your advantage, and second, to re-read and reflect on your own essay to ensure that you aren’t forgetting anything or handing in mediocre work. This could be a very good approach to the semester but it could solely be preparing us for the portfolio rather than or writing years to come. Then the contestants on Top Chief or Project Runway are being put to the test by the judges because the judges will give them specific tasks to complete that may seem crazy but will overall tech them something about themselves. The contestants are given the challenges that will make them think on their feet and expand their horizons. So if and when they get the job as a chief or a designer they are able to do things that perhaps no one has ever seen before. By doing this the judges are challenging the contestants but, do these challenges really help the contestant’s skills? Despite the similarities, of the challenges on these shows, and the assignments in these classes they also have differences. Due to the fact that the assignments typically require the students to practice, practice, practice, just with a different sort of twist each time but technically teaching the same ideas. Ideas like check your work, use your resources, follow directions, be creative, and make sure you have a purpose. Whereas in many cases on these television shows, to make them more entertaining, the judges will assign challenges that don’t really help the contestants with skill building. The challenges can help them broaden their imaginations and make them really think but that’s not teaching them much on how to improve their cooking or designing. I feel that the English 101 assignments are overall a better way to improve yourself even if the television series challenges are more fun.

Goals and Outcomes for Portfolios

For the Portfolios I will be looking for you to notice key terms, and questions you may be asked by your readers. In your writings you should include examples from different sources which may include published texts or The Student Guide to the First-Year Writing Program. You must be able to put in and possibly explain so that your readers may understand your piece is background information, brief summaries and examples. Finally you need and must have correct grammar in your writings. How I would judge these writings is by if they catch my attention right away and if it keeps me interested throughout the whole paper. Also I would be looking for how many different examples they used in their writing and if it seems as if they took time to explain why they used a certain example. I would judge this way is because you do not want to have to read a paper that is dull or does not relate to anything or can grab your attention. Having a little bit of spice in your paper is never bad.

Proflie Judgeing

I believe that when i judge is getting ready to make a decision they have to stand by what they asked for, but also at the same time need to see the contenders points of view, as to where they came from. In a way sometimes, its as simple as the example question; what is a hero and what makes them a hero. This question and be answered no a mever ending amount of ways, but if i was a judge there would be certain points that they would need to hit to get points in answering the question. Is it a personal hero, or a public on, and explain in depth why they chose this certain individual as a hero. Yet this is me and that is one example where judgeing can get hard and in a way complicated, because in the end no one is wrong when it comes to their answer.
If I were to be judgeing the final portfolio, i would keeping an eye on the topic they chose and how they talked about it in depth or in general, how personal they got, and if the paper has a peronsality in it, that shows to me as a reader. Also grammer, I mean after all this is an english assignment, and some things come first. Spell check is needed, contractions and not used in proper english writing, and using correct capitalization, and also overall simple spelling. If puncation is correct, or if its needs to be added, changed, or just deleted over all. When citing other documents; this needs to be done correctly, and as often as you use their writings. Not citing seems as though you are stealing their work and calling it your own. Yet to me, if they do it wrong, but its not a huge mistake its not major points off, they are giving the credit, but maybe they just did not have the exact order in the parenthesis's. Also are the texts that they are using realiable, are they factual, or is if wikipedia, they need to be using creaditable sources. Another point in judging is in the body of the paper, if their introduction and conclusion is strong, if it reels me into really wanting to read this paper and see their opinions. The thesis statement, is it strong, or weak, is it on topic of way off topic. Their conclusion, does it sumerize the paper well and completely, or does it still leave you with loose ends and questions. These are the points in the portfolio that I would be most looking for when it comes to judgeing them. Yet I would make sure that I also see where the writer is coming from in this paper.

judging portfolio

Everyone looks at things differently, which is why everyone judges things differently. If I were to judge the portfolios I would look for multiple things. The first among them being grammar. If a person has poor grammar it makes the piece extremely frustrating to read. Next I’d look for spelling. Spelling isn’t that high on my checklist, thought, it is annoying when words are misspelled. The reason for that being is I know personally how hard spelling is so I understand that people make mistakes. The most important thing I look for is personality. If the person is just citing facts it makes the paper extremely boring to read. I want the writer to show me who they are and tell me everything from their perspective. Otherwise, as a judge I would basically be reading the same paper over and over again. Lastly, the paper needs to flow. If it’s too choppy it is way to easy to get confused. These are the main things that I would look for in a paper. Some things that might help a paper that I wouldn’t be looking for specifically would be things like quotes or examples. These are a good way to show whomever the reader is that you know what your talking about and it’s also another way to make it your own. These are also important to help the reader to understand. If a writer follows these guidelines and tips they should have no problem what so ever writing a descent paper.
The Goal for Portfolio Assessment (in my own words)
  • Make sure the writing is clear and understanding to judges of the writing and that it includes details and facts about the topic that is addressed and also to those who are reading the material.
  • Go through the material and correct and identify key ideas, questions, and things that could help make it a better paper.
  • Include information from the resources that could possibly give more facts or key ideas to create an in-depth paper.
  • Include key ideas and terms and other questions and texts from other resources.
  • Choose the correct font so that the reader is focused and isn't distracted.
  • Create clarity for readers through different styles and arrangements of the writing. A unique feeling to the writing.
  • Provide useful materials so that reader has a better understanding of the writing, such as background information, descriptions, summaries, or definitions of difficult terms.
  • Try to make it as understandable as possible by paraphrasing long sentences or ideas to make the key point or simply summarizing the thought or idea.
  • Create a works cited page to avoid any kind of faults you may run into. Document all information that is gathered by an outside source other than yourself.
  • Have correct grammer and mechanics in the final draft and proof read any previous rough documents before creating or completing the final draft.

The English 101 final portfolio assignment is very significant to new and incoming students to college universities all over the world. It creates a new understanding, language, and writing skills that could be used in future careers and also everyday lives. If I were a judge of the portfolio assignment I would look for quality papers that follow the criteria and all the requirements given. Somes requirements that I think is essential to helping the students growth in college writing include effort, focus on the topic, and strength such as grammatical and mechanical items. I feel no matter how bad or good the paper is, any judge can see the amount of effort that a student has put into a paper. If a student has signifcant amount of research and facts from outside sources, judges can conclude that the student at least went to other measures for information. Another essential requirement would be to stay focused on the topic. I feel as a judge staying on topic is most important because it kind of substitutes as an timeline for the paper and makes it actually flow. Having an idea or some sort of direction for the paper shows the student can stay on the subject without touching other topics. This is an essential writing skill that will be gained from the portfolios and help students grow in their college writing careers. Lastly I think that students will be required to have strength and grammer and mechanics. This is college level writng and most students have learned all grammer and mechanics to write a well written paper. Little things such as spelling words wrong and little mishaps are simply careless mistakes, which come from students not proof reading or taking the measures to go over their work. No one in my opinion will have the perfect portfolio because we all have flaws, but i think as long as the student demonstrates and shows the ability to write a well written college paper, that they will be fine throughout their entire college career. No matter the struggles stay optimistic and everything will work out for the best.

Judging Portfolio

Everything in life gets judged off many different criteria, depending on what is being judged. In the context of our English class however, we must stick with a criteria that everybody must meet. In judging our portfolios, I would keep a consistent rubric that everyone must meet, which after completing this course, should be very easy to do. There are many crucial things needed to make a paper quality, including, content, grammar, voice and if the writer followed the directions of the prompt. I would look for content because it is important for the paper to have substance for it to even be judged. Next, i would look for grammar because it is important for a paper to be grammatically correct and professional. Third, I would look for voice because it is important for the paper to flow and be easy to read. Last, it is important for the writer to follow the instructions for the prompt because if they did not answer the question correctly, no matter how well the paper is written, it would not be scored as high as a well written paper that followed the directions.

judging portfolios

Judging is something everyone does on a daily basis. We also all judge in different ways. If I were to judge our portfolios, I would look for a couple key things. First off, I’d ask myself if the writer answered the question asked of them. This is extremely important because it’s the whole reason the portfolio was put together. Next I would look and see if the papers grammar was correct. And I would mainly look and see if the paper flowed easily and was easy to follow. If the paper wasn’t easy to follow, then I wouldn’t know if they answered the question or just randomly put something together at the last minute. I would next look to see if the word choice of the portfolio is that of a college writer. A portfolio with good word choice doesn’t tell you what the answer to the question is, but instead shows you or paints a picture in your head of what the answer to the question is. Lastly I would look to see if the paper had creativity. These portfolios need to be different and should show who you are as a person. Everyone is different and no two portfolios should be closely related. Therefore everyone’s portfolio will be different and unique making them fun to judge. All in all I would look to see if the portfolio answered the questions asked, maintained my attention, was easy to follow, and lastly was unique along with good word choice and sentence structure.

Juding

If I were a judging our end of the semester portfolios; there would be several aspects of each paper that I would be looking at, and paying closer attention to than others. For starters I would make sure each paper has a good attention getter that’s going to keep the reader interested. Also vital in the beginning of a paper is a strong thesis statement that the rest of the paper adheres to. Then I would make sure the papers meet the criteria and stay on the topic of the given assignment, and don’t stray or wonder on to a different subject. I would then turn to looking at the body structure and content, to see if the writer really put forth their full one hundred percent effort, or if it’s clearly noticeable that it was a rushed last minute assignment. I would also check for grammar errors, since it’s an English paper and we’re now in college our grammar in papers should be up to par. Along with grammar it is important that the paper flows nicely, and isn’t choppy and bouncing around from subject to subject (i.e. organization.) The voice of the paper should also be distinct and stand out, so the author makes a strong statement throughout the entire paper. Another huge aspect that I would judge, and really pay close attention to in our final portfolio is plagiarism since it is a high illegal offense, and could cost a college career. Overall a paper that keeps me interested in reading, meets the proper standards and that I could potentially learn something from would get a high score than one that puts me to sleep, but has decent excellent grammar.

Judging Philosophy

I believe that when a portfolio judge is determining whether or not a portfolio is to pass or fail the judge has to look at a few key guidelines. Before looking whether the writer has followed those guidelines the judge needs to decide if the writer has critically analyzed the work or the question that influenced the essay. If the judge can see that the writer has dug deep into their work and has analyzed its entirety, and not just an excerpt of the work, the judge can now move on to looking at the writing guidelines. Now when looking at a paper the judge has to decide if the writer has incorporated a brief, but thorough, summary of the text they are analyzing, and whether or not the writer's thoughts or topic of discussion has come through clearly. If these critical components of a paper are done correctly and up to par the judge can move on to the smaller components of an essay. These components would consist of proper grammar, punctuation, and a well documented work cited page. If these are also up to par I believe the paper should be passed on to the teacher for a grade varying from an "A" to a "C", or a passing portfolio. There is one problem I do have with the course goals and outcomes for the final portfolio assessment though. I believe that the judges and the teachers should be able to discuss the papers as they are being assessed for the simple fact that the judges have no idea what has happened in each class. Yes, the judges opinions are completely unbiased, but I feel in a way there should be some bias opinions brought forward in the grading process. The teacher can inform the judge who has actually analyzed the work and contributed good ideas in class and who has not. This will insure that the people who are not just skating by will get the grade they deserve, a passing one.

Judging Philosophy

In my opinion I think judging is very important to anyone’s life. I think it should be incorporated into many more things. Before this assignment I thought judging was something that was only done on reality television and for cheerleading and other events like that. Now I realize it can be done in everyday life, and to every person in ones daily routine. Judging puts pressure on many people to do their best work, it creates a sense of stress which in turn then motivates one to do their absolute hardest. If I were a portfolio judge I would incorporate a wide variety of criteria. For starters there would be guidelines for the assignment its self. Next I would look at if they followed those given guidelines. I would have to put any bias thoughts I have aside. Next I would look for uniqueness, did that individual go beyond his or her normal work. Grammar and Spelling would be important as well, although this is an English class I would allow for some free errors that did not count against the final grade. I would look for quotes from the material the work is from. I would look to see if that person’s work makes sense and flows well. Another very important quality I would look for is that the paper remains on the same one or two points, and that someone does not go off on random tangents. In most cases I think harsh criticism in a judge is a good quality, although in some obvious cases we know that judging can be negative.

Judging Portfolios

I believe that when assessing our portfolios the judges should look at each paper with the same criteria. The first thing they should critic is whether the writer had followed the directions. If the writing was absolutely A work but did not follow directions the judge should not be able to pass that paper in the portfolio. Another thing that each paper would need to have in order to pass the assessment is that each paper has to flow meaning that each paper should contain sentence fluency and good word choice. The audience who reads the papers should be able to tell what the writer is trying to get across and what the point of each paper is. Each paper in the portfolio should have ideas that are thought fully through and developed to a point that the paper is so easily read that someone who knows absolutely nothing about the topic can understand what the paper is saying. Finally each paper in the portfolio should demonstrate almost perfect grammar and punctuation. The portfolios handed in at the end of the semester need to be the student’s top game in order to get a grade that allows them to pass English 101. Being Judged and graded are things that we encounter everyday and putting 100 percent into everything that we do can help us become the best people we can be.

First weekly blog

When criticizing someone we must keep in mind that the person does not know that they are doing something wrong. If we just yell at the person it is not going to help. Yes it is frustrating but we must keep in mind that we are all humans and we all make mistakes. When receiving the criticism keep in mind that the person giving you advice is only trying to help you. We need to take it in and learn from our mistakes. There is nothing wrong in improving. At first you may be hurt but that's only normal, take some time and then prove to everyone that you can do it. Everyone has feelings and we should all respect them.

Judgement

When judging a paper I would look for many important things. The most important thing I would look for in a paper is did the person follow directions. If this person did not follow the directions and not meet the criteria, then the paper would have no meaning to me. The topic of the paper is very important, because a teacher ask a student to write a paper to find out if the student understood the topic and if the student learned anything for the topic. The second most important thing to writing a paper is word choice. If the person does not use the correct word choice the paper may not flow well. If the paper does not flow well, the paper can be confusing and boring. If the paper does not catch my attention I do not enjoy reading it and it makes it hard for me to want to judge it. If the person uses the right word choice and makes the paper interesting I would have no problem reading it and help them out in the few spots that they needed. The last important thing for me when judging a paper is the grammar. I understand we all make a few typing errors here and there, but when it is consistent I have to point it out to them to help them fix their errors. When judging someone there is a difference between being helpful and being rude. If I had to judge a paper I would make sure that I am trying to help them and not hurt them. It is hard to judge someone but it is even harder to be judge. We all need to try to remember that the person judging us is trying to help us out.

Judging philosophy

I believe that there is judging because it increases competitivness and allows people to strive for things that they normally wouldnt do. It allows people to open up and show creativity and improve there skills by means of criticsim. If I where to judge a paper for instance I would focus on a few certain things. First off I would look to see if they followed the dircetions and wrote about what they needed to write. Then I would check how the paper flowed and if the grammar of the paper was right. Last but not least I would look for examples of what they are writing about and if they kept the paper interesting. When judging there paper, i believe that i would use a method that i believe is most effective for me and that is constructive criticism. I would write on there paper exactly what i think could be improved and tell them if i believe they drifted off the main point of the story as well as help them out with grammar if it's needed. One thing that i would not criticise is the authors personnel opinion if the directions ask for it or if it is inserted to make the paper flow more originally. I wouldnt criticise something like this because its something that cant be criticised by a judge or shouldnt be. Your opinion is your opinion wheater they see it the same way or not shouldnt be a factor. The only time it should be criticised if it takes away form there paper. But besides that if i were a judge who was judging these portfolios i would look for pasion and creativity as well as a structured writing style which i mentioned earlier being the way the paper flows, grammar, wheather they where descriptive and showed examples, and wheather the writers followed directions or not.
Judging is something that we all do everyday whether we know it or not. Every time we eat, we judge the food. Every time we listen to the radio, we judge whether or not we liked that song. It is a constant in our lives. School is no exception. Our professors, T.A's, even fellow students all become our judges. I think the more passion and desire you have for something, the harder it is to take someone's critiques. It's difficult to hear someone point out your flaws, however it's one of the best things you can do because really, the only way to grow is from your mistakes.
When judging our portfolio's I would use a few simple criteria: Hook, how is the writer catching my attention and more importantly how are they keeping it? Grammar, are there little to no spelling and punctuation mistakes? Flow, does the paper sound like a bunch of random sentences copy and pasted together, or is there structure and everything flows smoothly? Word choice, is the writer using the same words over and over again, or mixing in new synonyms? Lastly, and most importantly, did the writer do what was asked of them? No matter how many of these criteria the writer hits in their paper if it has nothing to do with what was asked it's going to fail. The portfolio must follow the guidelines given to it.

Judgment

If I were a judge for the portfolios that our class will have to write at the end of the semester I would look for many different aspects of writing in each essay. In each portfolio, I would look for content, grammar, ideas, organization, sentence fluency, and how each of these items were applied to the paper. I would also like to b able to tell that a lot effort was put into the papers. I highly dislike when the reader of the paper can tell just by glancing at or by just barely skimming through the paper that the author rushed their work and research. Also when authors obviously had no honest connection and interpretation of their topics and ideas for their papers is another thing i do not appreciate in essays. Why should I even waste my time reading the paper if the author cares about their work less than I do. That goes not only for a paper but also the entire portfolio, presentation can mean a lot. Something quiet important to me but may or may not be as important to all people when they read essays, is the voice of the paper. Now, I understand that some papers can be very difficult to bring to life but, honestly I feel a writer who can give even the most boring topic a life of its own is an amazing author. By creating a relationship between the reader and the topic, writers who make voice a top priority in their work would shock me as a judge. Having an audience to read papers is just as important as writing them. So it is vital to appropriately utilize resources and research to more so explain and give background to your topics so that there is just a natural connection between the reader and the essay.

assignment 2 : judgement philosophy

my judging philosophy -

i think judging, in life, is something that we all probably dislike and fear, probably even are intimidated by. however, i believe it`s something that we need to experience to become well-rounded individuals and something we need in the advancement in our lives ( work, school, and home, etc. ) it`s very beneficial because i think it helps us see that we all are human and are not perfect.

in relation to reality t.v. -
however, judging in reality t.v. is somewhat different. people on these shows are competing with other people for a common goal. in life, we have different goals and aspirations. i believe that some people that come onto judging shows such as american idol or project runway already have the thought in their head`s that they`re are the best and everyone else are beneath them and not on their level. in some ways it`s ok to have that confidence but i think having someone judge them is beneficial because it shows them their flaws but also their strong-points and it helps keep them on their feet in the competition and coming with fresh and new ideas.

in judging writing samples/portfolios -
if i were portfolio judge, i would judge the readings based off this simple criteria : did they follow the directions, did they seem to understand the assignment, was it interesting to read from beginning to end and does is follow grammar and mechanic guidelines. i can`t say that i value some qualities or goals over each other because writing isn`t just based off one aspect of writing, it`s just a component of a list of things. if someone only focuses on one quality or goal when writing then the paper, in my opinion could have the high potential of being dull and mundane. when i write, i tend to focus on: getting my point across, following the prompt and keeping the reader interested. it`s gotten me pretty far at this point so i`ve stuck to it. however, this might not work for everyone. they would need to find out what their strong and weak areas are... usually this is found out after someone has JUDGED their work... get it?!

If I were the judge...

Being judged is not always negative, in fact to get the most out of the criticism one must view it as advice to help them improve. In general I think that writing is one of the most important means of communication and should always be worked on. Then again, I enjoy writing. If I were a judge of English 101 portfolios I would look for criteria that would evaluate each writer reasonably. I would also make sure the judging criteria is clear because nothing is less fair than being critiqued on something you didn’t know. I think it is important to start off an essay with a topic that is appropriate for the audience, and with interpretive essays, it is crucial the essay doesn’t become bias. The view of what is being written about, the audience and of the writer themselves must be taken into consideration. A writer should also make it clear to the audience what point or side they’re taking by using appropriate word choice and sentence agreement. Nothing is more confusing to read than a paper that doesn’t flow. To judge the fluency of an essay the judge shouldn’t have to reread a section more than twice and should understand the overall topic. This includes checking for mechanical and grammar errors. Seeing that the essay is being revised multiple times there is no excuse for spelling errors. Lastly, I think it is most important for the student to be proud of their work and to show improvement in their writing from the beginning of the semester. With a portfolio like this one I think it is so important to put a lot of time and effort into the paper. Whether or not writing is what the author likes to do, they should work their hardest to deserve a passing grade.

Assignment 2-Judging Philosophy

If I was judging a portfolio there would be many things that I would take into account. The first would be to make sure that the student followed all directions given when having to write the paper, and that they did so correctly. Directions are key to a paper because it doesn't matter how well the paper is written, if its not on the right subject it's completely useless to the class. All of the papers should express the students interpreted ideas and thoughts about the topic or questions given in the paper as well. The next thing I'd look for in the portfolio would be organization and making sure that the papers have an introduction and conclusion, and the paragraphs are well organized and there is good sentence fluency. The reader should be able to go from the beginning of the paper until the end and the paper should flow right through and not have any choppy sentences. All of the papers should have no grammar errors, run-on sentences, prepositional phrases, or bad punctuation either, this is something that the student should take into account before even submitting or handing in a paper to a professor, especially at the college level. Any direct quotes, summaries, ideas, and paraphrases should all be documented and well cited at the end of each paper as well to show that the student is again, well organized and isn't taking another author's quote or idea as their own. It's very easy to tell when someone does a paper because they care and want a good grade on it, or they just want to get it done and pass that class and thats very important as well. It's also very easy to point out when someone really enjoys and puts a lot of time into a paper and I think thats extremely important too. Also, the student should try to relate the subject of their paper to their own lives, and use examples in order to give the reader a better perspective on what they are trying to talk about. This also makes the paper much more interesting for the person reading it and they might feel that they can really relate or agree on the subject being discussed.

Criticism

Criticism is difficult to both give and receive. The difficulty of giving criticism is that you don’t want to hurt the person who is receiving the criticism. When giving criticism you would want to phrase it in the most helpful way possible. Also try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes so that you can be more sensitive to what their possible excuse for their actions is. Also when receiving criticism try to keep an open mind about what someone is saying to you so that you can possibly change your ways and better yourself.

Expectations

Expectations are something everybody has. We all have expectations for ourselves as long as expectations for others. In the shows we watched and along with many other shows, the judges tell the contests what they expect to be done. There expected to get their work done in the time presented, just like we are expected to get everything done and turned in on time. We can learn valuable lessons from reality television. Such as expect the unexpected, use your time wisely, and the most important thing, exceed expectations. Exceed yours as well as your peer’s expectations, it will make everyone better.

Assignment

After watching episodes from Project Runway and Top Chef there are similarities with there challenges. They both have time limits, judges, challenges, winners, losers and prizes. The challenges that both of the shows get are to test out what each person can do with either food or fashion. Some of the contestants understand the challenge and a few do not. For instance, in Top Chef the challenge was to make an entree with inspiration and improv. Majority of them used the words they were given to make the entree but one team did not. That hurt them in the end because they didn't follow directions. The judges liked the ones that were made correctly and fresh with different flavors. In Project Runway the challenge was to create a look for a red carpet event. The contestants did what they thought would be a good idea. Some went out of the box and some stayed safe. The dress that won this challenge was edgy and pretty. They thought it would be perfect for the red carpet.

Blog post #1

In both show it seem that both set of contestants are pushed to the limit by getting "heads up information at the last possible second. This make the show much more dramatic. What also helps this out is the over the top music and reactions of some of the judges or other people involved. With eliminations held ever show the contestants must be on thier A game a 100 percent of the time no one i really prepared for these callenges and this is shown by the suprizing twist and turns that seem to happen every minute. Both Top Chef and Project Runway seem to be an organized rollercoaster of dramtic twist to make the audiunce feel like that the contestants have no way of being able to be prepaed for these events. But in both shows you can find a type of dramtic irony because the events and challenges that these men and women face are propusaly focused on thier profession to make them feel like it should be easier when it only adds to the difficultly. Many feel like if they were in that situation the could be succesful when its only a cover to trick you into beliving that winning the grand prize will be easy.

P.S. Today is my Birthday... Im finally 18 :)

Judge Assignment

In Project Runway there are many challenges that the contestants encounter, the judges give them somewhat of a specific task. Then the contestants run frantically around gathering materials that they can use to make exactly what they believe the judges want. In the second episode where they must design something very unique, which is an outfit for a pregnant star, none of them have much experience with maternity fashion. This is what I believe makes this show enjoyable to watch. Things that the judges generalize are, for example; what type of outfit is wanted so the contestants are left with a very wide variety of what they can do. But as they are being judged on what they did, the judges repeat what they wanted out of the contestants, which I believe is a very good start when they begin their criticism. Overall what I think is most important about a judge, is that they have to make a harsh decision, and then choose really what best fits the goal that was given in the beginning. Finally regardless of all the many great creations that were made they must only choose the very best.

Top Chef and Project Runway

In both Top Chef and Project Runway the contestants have to complete challenges to become the next top chef/next top fashion designer. In Top Chef, the contestants have challenges such as making a dessert that will impress the judges and a top pastry chef. Some of the contestants did very well and did what the judges were asking, while others just played it safe. The winner of the challenge would get their recipe in the Top Chef Cookbook. I think that the judges of Top Chef look for someone who works diligently and in a timely fashion, who can make creative and delicious food, and can also work well with others. For Project Runway, the contestants had a challenge to make a red-carpet look. Some of the designers made gorgeous dresses, while others made dresses that didn't look anything like a red-carpet look. The winner of the red-carpet challenge would be immune for the next challenge. The judges of Project Runway look for creativity, something new and up coming, and that it's made well and executed well. They also want someone who can produce the garment in the 24 hours that they are given.

Project Runway/Top Chef

The reality TV shows “Top Chef” and “Project Runway” each have very similar aspects. In each show contests are given a challenge, whether it be designing a dress or preparing a meal. The contestants are then given a strict set of guidelines to prepare their work around. The contests presentations are then evaluated by a panel of judges, in which they are judged, not only on how well the contestants followed instructions and worked within the guidelines, but also the amount of creativity and personal taste is incorporated into their work. The judges in each of the shows are looking for quality in the contestants work as well as how the worked under pressure and with one and other. Judges were very critical of contestants who strayed too far from the guidelines.

I believe that items which were important to the judges of “Top Chef” and “Project Runway” would also be equally as important to a judge of the course blog. A judge for the course blog would be looking to see whether or not a student followed the instructions for what was assigned as well as how well they were able to incorporate their own personality into their writings.
