When it comes to putting the materials and elements together for a paper there are many things you need besides the topic. It’s the same for putting together a car. You not only need the brand and the name and the engine, one also needs the wheels, the paint job, the interior design, and the steering wheel. Your essay is not going to catch eyes with just text, your not going to win a prize for your big words and definitions alone. The author needs to include eye catching parts to create an image for their essay.

One of the things that Nicholas Carr gave to his essay to capture the reader was that he created a unique title, that drew attention and gave the reader the question, “um, I wonder that this is about?” which made them read on. Another thing that Nicholas Carr did with the essay was that he quoted from the movie Space Odyssey 2001 which gave the reader a familiar feeling and comfortable about maybe what the material is about. This gave the reader even more reason to read on.

As a reader would follow on in the essay they see that there is not only very good research, but also very good visual aid. He gave a picture which gave a visual picture in the readers mind to see what the author is talking about, and help understand his topic. Later on I saw also that he would use big letters to start off a new part of the topic in the essay. This is very good because it lets the reader know that they have completed a thought of the essay and it helps them connect it to the next part. It can also be seen as a check point in the writing, showing that they have gotten such far and has such and such more to go, before all date is collected.

Weekly Blog # 8

This week in class i think that at one point someone went really hard on the teacher and I think that they may have gone too far. I understood their point, but how she said it was not right. You don't talk to your Teacher like that.

Also I realized something more personal, I realized that maybe i should just do the assignment every week, why take a chance and not do one, and then have to write a make up one, that i fully did not understand how to write it.

I think that in the past week or two, our assignments have become more in depth with a certain writing style. A style of writing that is not my strongest, and at times when i write my essays i feel like I am doing it all wrong, and worried that I will be on the bottom. But when we discuss them in class I get the understanding of what we were looking for in our essays, but personally i do not think my essays are getting any better.

this week in English we wrote a paper on our worst date that we have had. This was my first time every writing about something that personally happened to me, since around 9th grade. It was a change in the typical so i liked this assignment. If this assignment didn't happen i honestly wouldn't share my worst date to everyone, so on the other side it was a challenge to just write about something embarrassing that happened to myself.

Throwing down the Gauntlet

For my challenge, you need to is read page 25 in your DK hand book, and examine how the person wrote down a schedule for there research paper. What are your thoughts on doing this for every paper that you have due. Is it a good or bad idea? If you think its a bad idea, why, and what would do you instead (if anything)? If you think that its a good idea, do you do it, or will you now? I would like you to write own your thoughts and explain your point of view on writing down schedules for papers throughout the year.

Weekly Blog #3

For this past week in English class i think our topic is a very specific topic. From the first days of watching Top Chief in class then as our homework, to watch three episodes of Project Runway. Now we are discussing how the judging on the TV shows compare to how the teachers will be judging our final portfolios. I think that this topic a very well thought out assignment for comparing and contrasting, because people would not usually see the similarities between the two of them, without really thinking about. Its a good challenge for us at students, and makes us think of the teachers point of view when it comes to grading our final portfolios so that as we are writing them we can make sure we do what they are looking for correctly.

Comparison/Contrast the two

For the Project Runway show, the judging was on outfits, which in many ways is different than papers. When a judge is holding a contest for designers, they look for colors, and how it looks on the model, they take note on if they followed the assignment or if they went on a tangent. While a judge is looking a paper they are looking for spelling, and grammar and punctuation.

While in both situations judges are looking for structure (in the outfit and in the essay formation), if its fits well (on the model, and in the topic given), does it show personality or not. These items are important for both the essay judges and the Runway judges.

Over looking happens more than one may think or assume that it would or does. I think that the view from the writes or designers aspect is over looked most of the time. When a reader first reads the sentence "John had had many calls today" you will first see a sentence error. Yet when you read it again you may catch yourself pausing at just the right moment in the sentence to hear it make sense. I think that if judges try to see the item which they are judging they will understand the writer more, and that in turns helps them see where they are coming from while writing the paper.

Proflie Judgeing

I believe that when i judge is getting ready to make a decision they have to stand by what they asked for, but also at the same time need to see the contenders points of view, as to where they came from. In a way sometimes, its as simple as the example question; what is a hero and what makes them a hero. This question and be answered no a mever ending amount of ways, but if i was a judge there would be certain points that they would need to hit to get points in answering the question. Is it a personal hero, or a public on, and explain in depth why they chose this certain individual as a hero. Yet this is me and that is one example where judgeing can get hard and in a way complicated, because in the end no one is wrong when it comes to their answer.

If I were to be judgeing the final portfolio, i would keeping an eye on the topic they chose and how they talked about it in depth or in general, how personal they got, and if the paper has a peronsality in it, that shows to me as a reader. Also grammer, I mean after all this is an english assignment, and some things come first. Spell check is needed, contractions and not used in proper english writing, and using correct capitalization, and also overall simple spelling. If puncation is correct, or if its needs to be added, changed, or just deleted over all. When citing other documents; this needs to be done correctly, and as often as you use their writings. Not citing seems as though you are stealing their work and calling it your own. Yet to me, if they do it wrong, but its not a huge mistake its not major points off, they are giving the credit, but maybe they just did not have the exact order in the parenthesis's. Also are the texts that they are using realiable, are they factual, or is if wikipedia, they need to be using creaditable sources. Another point in judging is in the body of the paper, if their introduction and conclusion is strong, if it reels me into really wanting to read this paper and see their opinions. The thesis statement, is it strong, or weak, is it on topic of way off topic. Their conclusion, does it sumerize the paper well and completely, or does it still leave you with loose ends and questions. These are the points in the portfolio that I would be most looking for when it comes to judgeing them. Yet I would make sure that I also see where the writer is coming from in this paper.

writing patterns

as for this class i am hoping that my writing pattern will improve. I am known to start in the middle, withthe body paragraphs, then figure out my conclusion, and last i work on my intro, but at times i forget that i need to proofread. I would like to work on proofreading my work and making sure that my grade does not go down from that.
