Distinctions

Writting is influenced greatly today by technology, which was discussed in both articles that we read. Some of the aspects that may stand out to you as a reader, or draw your attetion to it are, the fonts, such as what size it is, is it bold, underlined, italized, or just regular size twelve New Roman font. The number of paragraphs and how the body of an essay is set up may also draw your attention to it. Along with the body and paragraphs how the letters are set up on a page can also draw attention to a reader. Through technology our writting has become more advanced, in which both essays discuss different types of technology used.

Word processors and technology effect people’s writings, more now than ever before. In some instances it may require you to think differently when writing a paper. Also, with the advancement in technology we can now look information up on the computer making it a speedier process. Also to assist in the writing process we now have computers rather than type writers or hand written. However by using the different programs in the word processers we can create identity to the texts, such as sprucing up the text by using a fun font. Along with computers, we have lap tops now so we can virtually take our writings anywhere.
Word processors have a different setup then Microsoft word; therefore we have to think differently when writing through this.

Frankly.. the paper hand out confused the crap out of me. I didnt know what it was trying to say, therefore i had a very hard time trying to write a paper about something I couldn't comprehend. So put this is in the bottom of your rankings, but at least I attempted it.
I wish we would get an easy topic that I can actaully write something decent about, like our worst date topic.

Writters challenge

Plagiarism is a very big deal in college writting and is commonly defined as theft at UWM its considered to be academic misconduct and is subjected to the UW-system of rules. Since teachers/professors are always claiming they can spot plagiarism as easily as tieing their shoes; your job/challenge is to test their plargiasm spotting skills. For this assignment, you must read about the plagiarism policy on pages 12-13 in the blue hand book, then you must pick a topic of your choice you must find an article, report, paper etc. on this article and print it off. Then using the same topic write a paper about it using your own ideas. Then it's up to the teacher and classmates to determine which was the printed plagiarised article and which was the actual students writting. By doing this challenge we're going to get a better understanding of plagiarism and how to aviod it.

compare/contrast

Everything in life can be either compared or contrasted from one another. For instance writting papers in English class can be both compared and contrasted from that of a reality T.V. show. Using what we were to read for an example. Each assignment whether it be a challange or a paper, is given out with guidelines that one must follow. Within these guidelines, even though everyone is given the same you must come up with something different and unique from everyone elses. In both you are also given a time frame in which the challage, or paper must be compeleted with your best work at hand. In both papers and reality shows, you must think about the challange carefully and plan your excuction as to make sure that youll be finished in time. Although you are supposed to think outside the box, in both cases you must not stray to far away from topic, or challange. Although they are the same in many ways writting a paper in an english class and doing a challange on a reality show are different in many aspects as well. Such as on a reality show you're going to be judged differently because of the fact they need to keep the audience engaged. If they're were a typical outcome everytime no one would want to watch. When a professor is reading a paper, the person writting the paper is the only one trying to engage someone, the reader. The professor doesnt have to worry about whats going to get good ratings on T.V. or putting a twist on their judging. Also the outcome of the juding for both is completely different. If you write a bad paper, you get a bad grade, you can improve it next time. However if you have a bad challange you can get sent home with no chance to improve.
So all in papers and challanges in T.V. shows are the same challange wise but not so much juding wise.

Juding

If I were a judging our end of the semester portfolios; there would be several aspects of each paper that I would be looking at, and paying closer attention to than others. For starters I would make sure each paper has a good attention getter that’s going to keep the reader interested. Also vital in the beginning of a paper is a strong thesis statement that the rest of the paper adheres to. Then I would make sure the papers meet the criteria and stay on the topic of the given assignment, and don’t stray or wonder on to a different subject. I would then turn to looking at the body structure and content, to see if the writer really put forth their full one hundred percent effort, or if it’s clearly noticeable that it was a rushed last minute assignment. I would also check for grammar errors, since it’s an English paper and we’re now in college our grammar in papers should be up to par. Along with grammar it is important that the paper flows nicely, and isn’t choppy and bouncing around from subject to subject (i.e. organization.) The voice of the paper should also be distinct and stand out, so the author makes a strong statement throughout the entire paper. Another huge aspect that I would judge, and really pay close attention to in our final portfolio is plagiarism since it is a high illegal offense, and could cost a college career. Overall a paper that keeps me interested in reading, meets the proper standards and that I could potentially learn something from would get a high score than one that puts me to sleep, but has decent excellent grammar.

Top Chef vs english

The structure of the reality show Top Chef, is similar to that of our college English class. In the show they receive a challenge that they must complete, in a certain amount of time. The point of the challange is to do their best to great some sort of food dish, that has to impress the judges, and beat out the rest of the contestants. In English, we are assigned papers, which can be considered our "challenges." With our papers, we're given a time frame in which the paper has to be completed. Our goal for the paper = do the best we can to impress the teacher and get the best grade possible. While the show goes on and the challenges get harder and harder, our papers follow the same trend. We must continuously work on how we can improve our paper challenges just as they must work on how to improve their dishes each show. By having the challenges get harder, its expanding our, and their horizon and making us step out side the box to try something new, possibly make a mistake, and learn how to fix it.
Once the judging of their dishes or our papers come around, you'll notice that how they get judged on the show and how our papers get judged is extremly similar. The judges on the show first start with compliments and constructive critizisim, and then really just lay in and let them know what they need to fix. When our papers get graded they often are graded and given comments based on constructive critizism. Therefor I understand why we watched Top Chef for Enlgish.
